So, you've built yourself
a site and now you need a place to store it. Not a problem. Free space
for homepages is readily available.
All of the host sites listed
here have some sort of page builder that you can use to build your first
page, but you won't be satisfied with the results.
The Terms of Service for
each host varies, but I don't know of any that allow porn, hate mongering,
or promoting illegal activities. If that's your thing, you're out of luck
here.
This is by no means a complete
list. But if all you want is a decent place to store your site, you should
find what you need here.
Until July, I felt that
Xoom was one of the best free web providers
on the web. They give you 11 megs of space, which is more than most people
need. Also, they don't put advertisements on your page, and they don't
have pop up advertising. A pretty good deal.
Since the beginning of
July, the whole place has been squirrelly, I can only hope that these problems
will eventually be worked out. Until then, I can't recommend setting up
your first site here. Maybe Xoom will get their act together eventually!
Xoom will allow you to
put up a business site, but they do not allow you to have paid advertisements
on your site. They now insert a small bar at the top of each of your pages.
Still, not a bad deal, when it's working.
Tripod
is also quite generous with the free space. You get 11 megs of space there,
too. Tripod will allow you to have paid advertisements on your site and
will now allow you to put up a business site.
Tripod does the pop up
advertisement thing, which can be annoying. Not as annoying as having ugly
banners pasted all over your pages, but annoying all the same.
It's been my experience
that Tripod is slower than some but they are at least reliable. It has
also been pointed out that Tripod is a little easier to deal with if you
are new at this.
One of the most generous
of the free host sites (20 megs) is Fortune
City.
No business sites, no paid
advertising, and they stick their banner thing at the top of each and every
one of your pages, which makes a framed site, or pop up pages out of the
question. I have also found them to be slow, and when I had a site there,
the ability to upload was iffy.
But, hey, you get 20 megs
free! It may be worth it to you.
The most popular of the
free hosts has to be Geocities.
The now standard 11 megs of space are available, along with a lot of beginners
tools and such. Here, also, no business sites, no paid advertisements.
Geocities either requires that you put their 'geoguide' advertisement at
the top of your page, or have the pop up advertisement. They also have
this Watermark thing that takes the place of having their logo on your
page.
Geocities does the 'community'
thing to the Nth degree, which I hate but others apparently like. To each
his own.
Strangely, I've never had
a site at Geocities. I really don't like the fact that they assign numbers
instead of names. I've had favorite sites book marked at Geocities that
disappeared (which is annoying enough) and were replaced by entirely dissimilar
sites. Due to this, I'm reluctant to link to a Geocities site. But that's
me.
OK, so now you've found
a home for your new pages. The next question is, how to get 'em from your
'puter to their's. hmmm
Most of the above listed
sites have a built in utility that is capable of doing this (called something
along the lines of a 'file manager' usually) which lets you upload one
miserable file at a time. but there is a better way.
Composer and FrontPage
Express both have a 'publishing' utility which lets you upload your files
if your server supports it. Even so, they do not allow you to delete old
files from your server. The best thing is to just get an FTP utility. All
of the above sites support FTP, tho many are putting limits on it's use.
This is an effort to undermine 'warez' sites that ruin it for the rest
of us.
I use WS FTP 32, which
can be found at ZD net's Software Library.
It is a no frills kind of utility that gets the job done simply and easily,
and it's free. My kind of program. But that's me.
Not everybody wants the
no frills approach. Not to worry, there are other FTP programs available.
AceFTP
- AceFTP is a great program that allow users to transfer files from their
system to an Internet Server. AceFTP includes advanced options, such as
connecting to several servers at the same time and an integrated browser
that allows you to view all your files.
kinda cool.
